Anthropocentrism

The arbitrary insertion of people or their attributes into our explanations of the Physical World.

Arbitrary veneration or denigration of humans counts as anthropocentrism. However, explanations that naturally reference people — such as those involving Creativity, Personhood, or universal explainers — do not.

Connections

  • Contrasts with Principle of Mediocrity — which falsely dismisses human significance
  • Universal explainers are genuinely significant, so referencing them is not anthropocentric
  • Personhood explains why people matter without being arbitrary
  • Relates to Bigotry — both involve misjudging based on irrelevant attributes
  • A proper Explanation references people only when warranted
